Counseling Department

ICA Cristo Rey students experience rigorous preparation for success in higher education and the workplace. Our school is committed to providing education that ensures every graduate has met the requirements for the California State University and UC system, and is equipped with the tools necessary to flourish in higher education. One-hundred percent of our 2016 graduates are currently attending college. Our mission is that each young woman who attends ICA Cristo Rey will have the same opportunity.

We know that our students need help navigating academic, social, and personal challenges. The Counseling Department supports each student as she grows into a successful graduate, ready to move on to higher education.

As Director of Academic Counseling, Melissa Ruiz works with students and families to ensure that each student feels academically supported at ICA Cristo Rey. She encourages each student to give her complete effort in school, and provides direction to appropriate resources. Tutoring from teachers and peers and after-school seminars offer academic support to students who need extra help.  In addition to making regular classroom visits throughout the school year and providing parent informational evenings, Ms. Ruiz also meets with individual students and their families to ensure the consistent involvement of both in the student’s education.

As College Counselor, Gianna Benson facilitates our four-year College Counseling Program. Beginning in freshman year, students complete checklists of required tasks, which include researching colleges, applying to scholarships, and exploring career options. The Counseling Department offers access to its library and computers, and provides opportunities for students to participate in external support programs. Annually, Ms. Benson organizes the Fall College & Programs Fair for students to learn about and apply to colleges and other programs across the country. A unique On-Site Admissions Day offers seniors the opportunity for early admission to a variety of colleges in the greater Bay Area. In addition, events such as the Cash for College Workshop ensure that all students applying to college are strongly supported throughout the process. Ms. Benson meets personally with each family as the student enters senior year, and offers drop-in advising throughout the school year during break, lunch, and after school to ensure students have access to all the information they need.

Personal Counselor Arlette Molina builds relationships with students and encourages healthy, mindful ways of life for all students she meets with. Ms. Molina assists students in adjusting to the difficulties of adolescence, and responds to crises which may arise in the lives of the students at ICA Cristo Rey. She is assisted by a knowledgeable counseling intern from the University of San Francisco. To empower students on campus, Ms. Molina also facilitates the Girl Rising Club, a global campaign for the education and empowerment of women. Through the Girl Rising Club, students are able to engage in events which build a stronger recognition of community amongst the young women on campus at ICA Cristo Rey and beyond.

Within this framework, the counseling department members work together to ensure the students are cared for in all aspects of their lives at ICA Cristo Rey.
