Summer 2017

English Department

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

Summer reading is required by the English Department. It is an essential part of the curriculum and of each student's education. Completion of the summer reading is evaluated when the student returns to school in August, and it constitutes a part of the student's first-quarter grade in her English class.

Taking notes as you read is strongly encouraged in order to review before summer reading assessments.

The assigned reading is as follows:

ENGLISH IV
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison

ENGLISH III
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon

ENGLISH III Honors
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
The Awakening by Kate Chopin

ENGLISH II (& ENGLISH II Honors)
The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros

ENGLISH I
Children of the River by Linda Crew

AP ENGLISH LIT
Three summer reading books are required of AP English students. They are:
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Sula by Toni Morrison

These novels may be obtained used from previous AP students, from a used bookstore or website, from any regular or online bookstore, or from the public library. E-books and Kindle versions are available for all three novels.

There will be reading tests on all three novels during the first two weeks of school, after you have had an opportunity to ask questions and discuss them. All three of these novels will be used during the year, as the basis of papers, discussions and A.P. practice questions. Taking notes as you read is required in order to review before summer reading tests and to prepare to write about these texts as the year progresses.

If you do not/cannot pass all three tests on the summer reading books, you may be asked to transfer out of A.P. English.
