September, 2013

CWSP was thrilled to welcome the largest incoming freshman class to our summer training workshop, M.A.P.S (Motivation, Attitude, Professionalism, Skills) for Success. Throughout the 2-week workshop, students participated in classes to build their motivation, attitude and professionalism. They also focused on areas of communication, working office equipment and managing computer programs. In addition to class and team building time, students heard from ICA graduates, current student leaders and professionals who shared their personal work experience and advice. It was our pleasure to welcome Catherine Dobbs, creative recruiter for Gap Inc. and Old Navy, share her tips and tools for career success. Students completed the M.A.P.S workshop and also built ICA school spirit while bonding with their new Spartan sisters. As we begin the school year, CWSP will challenge students to focus on these key elements to success by introducing assignments and tasks to support and enrich their work experience.

Welcome Back to School

Welcome to the 2013 - 2014 new school year of blessing and celebration. Rejoice with us in 130 years of Catholic education on the corner of 24th Street and Guerrero Street. This year we welcome into the ICA Cristo Rey family, 100 Frosh young ladies with 12 sophomore, junior and senior transfer students. We are growing our student body and a spirit of joy echoes within our walls. "Around the blue and white we gather cheering you, our ICA!" A BIG ICA thank you to the Riordan band for joining us for a spirited celebration and formal blessing of our 130th year.

Senior Spotlight

Ashley Lopez (class of 2014) a graduate of James Lick Junior High School and a member of 826 Valencia, had the opportunity to work for 9 weeks in a SFSU lab this summer as a paid intern. Through Project SEED (Summer Experiences for the Economically Disadvantaged), Ashley learned to use cutting edge biotechnology tools and techniques, such as liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry; she also received a $2500 stipend. Ashley was mentored by SFSU researchers Drs. Robert Yen and Bruce Macher who were awarded a grant in August 2012 to study protein structure, protein interactions, and enzyme inhibitors, among other topics. Ashley’s chemistry teacher, Ms. Anya Manes was thrilled for Ashley because these are very technical skills which will qualify her to work in other university labs and research centers. Ms Manes commented, "I have not heard of ANY high-school student learning mass spectrometry”. ICA is proud of Ashley’s accomplishment as a budding scientist. Way to go Ashley!
